But this way of thinking, though dramatic and seemingly noble, simplifies the rich and complex nature of human experience. Pleasure and pain are not moral opposites, nor are they competing forces where one must be condemned and the other praised. Both have purpose, meaning, and influence, and understanding their roles requires more honesty than simply glorifying one and rejecting the other.

To denounce pleasure often stems from a fear of vulnerability. Pleasure feels light, temporary, and delicate. People worry that if they enjoy themselves too much, something will go wrong. They fear loss, disappointment, or instability, so they treat pleasure as a distraction or a luxury they haven’t earned. In some cultures and families, pleasure is even associated with laziness, indulgence, or guilt. But pleasure, when it is authentic, is not an enemy to growth—it is a source of nourishment. Joy replenishes emotional energy, strengthens hope, and connects people to one another. It offers moments of clarity and presence that hardship cannot provide. Denouncing pleasure entirely means denying ourselves the sweetness that makes life worth living, the softness that balances life’s rougher edges.

On the other hand, extolling pain can stem from the belief that suffering is inherently meaningful. Pain undoubtedly has transformative power. It forces reflection, breaks false illusions, and highlights areas of life that demand change. Difficult moments shape resilience, depth, and empathy. They teach lessons that joy alone cannot. But this does not mean pain is inherently noble. It is not a badge of honor, nor is every hardship a path to enlightenment. Some pain strengthens, but much pain simply wounds. When people glorify suffering, they may stay too long in harmful situations—relationships that drain them, roles that diminish them, environments that suppress them—believing that endurance itself is proof of character.

Suffering only becomes meaningful when we use it to grow. It is the reflection, not the suffering itself, that transforms. Pain without introspection can break a person. Pain romanticized can trap them. Pain understood can free them.

To say you must denounce pleasure and extol pain is to accept a false choice. Humanity does not thrive on extremes. Pleasure is not the enemy of wisdom, and pain is not the only path to strength. In reality, a balanced life invites both experiences. Pleasure offers rest, inspiration, laughter, connection, and hope. Pain offers growth, clarity, resilience, and depth. Both are teachers—just in different languages.

Instead of denouncing pleasure, we can learn to differentiate between pleasure that nourishes and pleasure that numbs. Genuine joy expands us. Empty pleasure distracts us. And instead of extolling pain, we can learn to honor the lessons it brings without welcoming unnecessary suffering into our lives. Pain that challenges us and pushes us forward is valuable; pain that drains us and repeats itself is not.

A richer perspective acknowledges that life is built on contrast. Pleasure reminds us what we live for; pain reminds us how we grow. Pleasure brings meaning to resilience; pain brings depth to joy. Together, they create a full and dimensional life—one where we are not bound by fear of happiness or addiction to suffering, but guided by awareness, balance, and intention.

In truth, you do not need to denounce pleasure or glorify pain. You need only understand what each experience is trying to teach you, and allow both to shape you without letting either one control you.

Yet, I have to denounce pleasure and extol pain is a phrase that captures a mindset many people slip into without realizing it—an internal belief that comfort is somehow suspicious and that pain is a more reliable measure of authenticity or growth.
